The US version of the 2-6-2 tender locomotive, commonly known as the “Prairie” for it’s intended use in the Midwestern Prairies of the United States, was an evolution of the 2-6-0. The first of this type were built by Brooks Locomotive Works in 1900 for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. More than a thousand 2-6-2’s existed in the US, Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway being one of the largest consumers of this type. Unfortunately its nosing problems made this locomotive unsuited for passengers workings. Due to the inherent instability of its symmetrical wheel layout, the center of gravity remained centered over the driving wheel that caused the reciprocation rods, when working near the center of gravity, to induce severe side-to-side nosing resulting in instability if unrestrained.
