The MONON Railroad (MON) AKA Chicago, Indianapolis, and Louisville Railway (CIL) ca: 1897-1971, operated in Indiana and the States of close proximity, with it’s main routes converging in Monon, IN. It was merged into the Louisville and Nashville Railroad in 1971, and much of the former MONON right of way is owned today by CSX Transportation. Headquartered in Chicago, IL, the MONON had seven sections. Sections Six and Seven were spurs to the west, Six serving the Indiana coal fields. Two main lines ran south from Lake Michigan through Monon, one to Indianapolis then east to Cincinnati and Dayton, OH, while the other ran further south to French Lick and Louisville, KY. Freight and Passengers were carried over all parts of the line.
